Moon Gazing at P’en Pavilion on Mid-Autumn Night by Po Chü-i

Moon Gazing at P’en Pavilion on Mid-Autumn Night

Po Ch’ü-i

Remembering the mid-autumn night in the old days,

I, gathering with other newly elected officials,

was at the Apricot Garden adjoining the Ch’ü-chiang Pond.

Another mid-autumn night comes this year;

I, in exile, am standing in front of the pavilion along the bank of Pen river.

Gazing into the northwest wondering where my hometown is,

while I have seen the full moon

rise from the ground of southeast time to time.

No one recognized what the wind whispered yesterday;

The only acquaintance I have tonight

is the pure moonlight revisiting from years ago.
