Lyrics: Antinomy

By adding lyrics to Lost Theme of the Brian de Palma film Femme Fatale (2002), Taeko Ohnuki provides a different interpretation of this soundtrack piece by Sakamoto. Antinomy, the result of this collaboration, showcases Ohnuki’s perceptive writing and the compatibility between her voice and Sakamoto’s music. Both blessed with the fluid, crystal quality resembling water, the vocal and backing piano flow in accordance like the ripples in the lyrics. The layers of emotional intensity gradually reach the climax in the chorus part, and at last, quiet down to the pensive stillness.

Beyond the cracked wall and
The roadside trees
I can hear the laughter
Of two youngsters

Dreams are stripped away
Losing the shapes
I walk through time
With no turning back

I and you
Cross paths somewhere
But our closed hearts
Have not realized it yet

Like the two sides
Of a coin-
The pain of being even
Not able to separate

Driving along the river
I open the car window
The keys gripped tightly in hand
I throw them down the water

Something changes
Along the tiny ripples
The sky is reflecting
Everything that flows away

Two of us were captured in a fortress of thorns
But I still loved you
Still filled with bright light
With the overflowing joy of life

You and I
Again brush past each other
Still, we have yet to realize
That this is our fate
